The upgrade of an item allows players to boost the gear score of an item up to 700 and add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.

Certain items can be upp'd for their unique stats (like an ideally rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) while others like weapons do not change significantly after an upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can boost their numerical stats, including attack damage, crit probability and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons also have a flat bonus that increases their damage per second. Additionally some weapons come with a set bonus which is activated when three or more of the same weapon are equipped on a single unit. This bonus can sometimes be more than the damage a weapon upgrade alone can cause.

The cost of upgrading a weapon's capabilities is contingent on the quality of the weapon and its current level. For example, an +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a weapon will increase until it requires more Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.

Upgrades to weapons can also alter the stats of the base. While this is generally beneficial but it can also have negative effects as well. In the case of items that are only used in a specific build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs for instance) upgrading them could render them useless unless you get a lucky roll.

Armor items can be upgraded to boost their effectiveness. For instance, if you have chests or helms, it will boost its defense base while gloves and belts improve their required strength and dexterity. Armor also has the option of rerolling its Enhanced Defense percentage, which means that it could reroll to a lower value.

The upgrade template for a weapon will display the new stats that it will get when upgraded in addition to their respective values. This means that a weapon will gain 3% attack damage if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. However the 3% does not mean that it will be hit for 3 fewer times as it is an absolute number.

A weapon can also be rerolled using the green button that has arrows that circle in the menu for items. This will roll the item and alter its stats, however, it will not reset the weapon's levels or connect to the status of your account.

Armor

A few upgrades to your armor can make a huge difference in your ability to survive. Certain sets provide massive boosts to poison or curse, fire, and magic resistance, which makes traversing tough areas a breeze. Generally speaking, the more defense your character is, the more value you will get from every point of health you possess and it's crucial to upgrade your armor as much as possible.

To improve your armor, head to one of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four in total each of which requires you to complete a special side quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe. After you've completed the main side quest and completed the fountain that corresponds and then you can contact any Great Fairy to open up the armor upgrading menu.

Each piece of armor can be upgraded to three levels, and the amount of materials and Rupees required for each level will differ. In general, you're looking at anything from three to five Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees for the first upgrade, and anywhere between five Rubies and ten Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns for each subsequent upgrade. For instance, the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep pace with a good-sized group of enemies in the majority of cold environments and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded all the way to +20 defense, granting you enough protection to withstand the full-on assault with a few of your friends.

You can't upgrade your armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior then you should concentrate on upgrading your armor for physical strength or spell power. It's also worthwhile to save your armor upgrades to use for armor you'll be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you wear for the final boss fight, the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.

You can also gain benefits to your armor by giving the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. You'll typically want to keep these upgrades for the weapon you'll be using to win the game. For example the Longsword or Battleaxe. But it's useful to have some upgrades to the helmets and chest armor to allow you to escape some monsters.

Potions

Potions are liquids that, when consumed by the player, give an immediate effect. There are five kinds of potions that have different effects and durations. Certain potions can be upgraded to increase their level of effectiveness. You can also increase the effects of certain potions by adding glowstone dust and redstone.

Upgrades to potion require a certain amount of XP. This can be earned by crafting them on a craft table or by storing them in the Alchemist chest. However, the upgrade price will vary based on the type of potion you want to upgrade, and also on the item's Mark Level and Rarity.

To upgrade a potion to the next level, right-click on it in your inventory and select the "Upgrade" option from the menu. This will open an GUI where you can choose the potions you want to upgrade and the amount of XP they will give you when upgraded. Upgrading potions can be done in batches of up to five at a single time, and the XP they provide will be added to your current XP level.

Once a poton is upgraded and stored, it will not degrade unless you take it out again or break the bottle in the container it is stored. You can also rename the potion by clicking it in your inventory.

Version 1.7.2 introduced a few changes to the way potions are used. For example splash potions now have an average duration of zero,08 seconds (this is not the same as the 22.5 seconds that are displayed on the item hover display). The table for potion can now be crafted with four Wood Planks and two Glass. This allows it to be used by players in Survival and Bedrock. Bedrock Edition potions are not compatible with cauldrons, as is the case with Java Edition. The same is true for the use of a potion in an empty cauldron. This will draw out the liquid, and then refill the bottle.

In addition to armor, weapons and potions, players are able to upgrade their trinkets. Upgrades can be purchased by paying the appropriate currency to an upgrade vendor. In contrast to other upgrades for items trinkets, trinkets can be exchanged at will without losing their status.

Upgrade vendors can be found at the capitals of every zone and in some cases in dungeons. Upgrades for trinkets can be bought with tokens, gold or fragments of a rare trinket.

Upgrades are a less expensive alternative to buying a new trinket. It is possible to upgrade the player for as little as 12 tokens. The new trinket will have the same base ilvl of the previous one, and will have an additional 1% upgrade bonus.

Trinkets can be upgraded once they're no longer needed which allows a player to boost their power and value over time. They can be traded between players and are a viable alternative to gold.

Players must upgrade their most valuable items first. This usually means the best-in-slot items for their class, followed by their secondary items and finally, other items of gear they won't replace soon (for example rings or cloaks).  item upgrading  should also consider their class's preferred stats when deciding which items to upgrade.
